With the arrival of spring comes a fresh new season and focus on Mother Earth. Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The connection that we have to nature, plants, and the land is integral to our health and all that we are. The day represents a future for generations to come and keeping the environment we all occupy healthy and sustainable. Earth Day reminds us to take care of our planet—whether it’s recycling and repurposing, attending a virtual event, or spend some time outside and show some love to the amazing place we all call home. Explore these ideas on other ways to celebrate!

- Plant something. Add plants or herbs to your home that have added health benefits.

- Change your paper bills to online billing.

- Change your diet to fight climate change! Check out some plant-based recipes.

- Shop local stores or farmers markets for produce to reduce the distance from farm to fork.

- Use a reusable water bottle to make a big impact on your plastic consumption.

- Calculate your personal carbon footprint and make changes to reduce it.

- Unplug electronics when you’re away.

- Donate your clothing and home goods.

- Use cloth towels in the kitchen instead of paper towels.

- Go and enjoy nature in a special way. Do something that gets you in touch with nature.

At NEMA San Francisco, we celebrate Earth Day every day of the year…

Sustainability. With a LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, NEMA is a responsible member of the San Francisco community thanks to a host of strategies that minimize its environmental footprint and make everyday life better.

Sustainable Site. The project is located on a previously developed site, reducing its development impact. The urban environment is extremely dense and walkable, with an average property density of 240,000 square feet per acre in the surrounding neighborhood. Building users have access to ample open space with three roof terraces providing a venue for fitness and social activities as well as nearly 9,000 square feet of vegetation.

Measurement & Verification. A comprehensive Measurement & Verification Plan is in place to compare the actual measured energy consumption and demand of the building's systems with what was expected based on the design. The plan will help determine the building's overall energy savings over time and identify any problem areas where savings are lower than expected. All energy uses for the building are monitored, including individual electricity sub-meters for each residential tenant.

Reduced-Carbon Transportation. NEMA provides secure bicycle storage for over 30% of residents, more than twice the required LEED threshold. The site is located within walking distance of light rail, subway, and public bus stops. For times when occupants do need to drive, NEMA provides several electric vehicle charging stations, as well as a vehicle sharing program that includes four low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles.

Transit-Oriented Location. The site is located within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and multiple nodes of transportation. With a walking score of 98, a transit score of 100 and a bike score of 97, NEMA San Francisco is a walker, rider, and biker paradise (according to walkscore.com).

Efficient Water Use. Demand on conventional water supplies and pressure on sewage treatment systems is reduced by the use of greywater. Re-using greywater also reduces the volume of effluent entering watercourses which can be ecologically beneficial.

Green Cleaning. NEMA uses cleaning products and practices that have lower health and environmental impacts than conventional strategies to promote safety and wellness for its residents and staff.

Air Quality. 100% smoke free, NEMA also selects paints and finished based on their low chemical content to improve quality for all residents and staff.
