The Market at 1355 Market Street is mere steps from your door at NEMA, and did you know there are lots of exciting things in the works there? We had a chance to catch up with the Marketing Director and scored some insider info including best time to shop, wine deals, new tenants and more!If you missed the latest news on the Mid-Market food scene, let’s recap for you. There is a massive Food Hall that’s planned for The Market on the remaining ground floor of the Twitter building that will nearly double its size. The Market is finalizing the curation of food vendors and will not decrease retail offerings, but add an additional 10-12 food vendors to the existing grill, bar, and food market.

Besides the Food Hall, more exciting things are happening at The Market! They are in the process of making some changes to the flow of the grocery department so that it will be easier for customers to shop. With this move they will also be beefing up their selection within various product categories. Have ideas? They would LOVE to hear from customers on which trendy new food products you would like to see them carry. Shoot them over an email at: feedback@visitthemarket.com

Must Try at The Market:
Azalina’s: Featuring some of the best Malaysian street food in the city, this is a must try within the Market. Don’t expect fast food as they make each bowl to order and there is often a line for their food. Insider tip: You can order their food via caviar and Uber Eats if you want to avoid the lines and wait.

Manila Bowl: Score some awesome Filipino dishes that are quick and easy to pick-up and enjoy. Insider tip: Their fresh pork and veggie Lumpia are available on the hot food bar on Thursdays!

New Tenants:
Smokebread: From the former chef of Bar Tartine and Duna restaurants, Smokebread will serve homemade sourdough bread, dips, spreads and salads made from surplus produce. The food is inspired by small mezze sides, the perfect food. Examples are paprika farmer’s cheese spread, yogurt dip with dill and kohlrabi, butternut squash tahini with turmeric and sprouted mung bean dip with chili oil. The team will be doing a pop up starting in February at the front corner of the building next to The Shop.

Gio Gelato: This Italian family owned and operated gelato company makes classic fresh gelato from California milk. Look for their classic Gelato Bike Stand next to Tony’s slice house soon.

The Shop at The Market: The Shop is a concept shop within The Market: an apothecary, book, jewelry and housewares store offering multiple reasons to walk into the space each day. The light-filled space is merchandised with subtle changes in material and texture to define the different product zones. Curated offerings can include local coffee, tea & craft chocolate, plants by Sprout & Stem, select housewares, cards & stationary, gifts, jewelry, wine and small–batch apothecary products with a focus on natural ingredients. The shop also contains a book selection focusing on food, fashion, health and culture. The Shop at The Market is an intimate neighborhood refuge with warmth, and familiarity, providing an escape from the big businesses of Market Street & Civic Center.

Thanx Loyal Shoppers: The Market is working on some more robust offerings for loyal customers. They are currently setup with a mobile app called Thanx with some simple rewards based on purchases made within the store. This program will expand and grow this year with exciting offers for new customers and better incentives as we move into 2019.

Insider Shopping Tips:
Food Delivery: A lot of The Market tenants offer their foods on various platforms such as Caviar, Ritual, UberEats and more. If you want to skip lines or don’t want to leave your home utilize one of these apps.

Full Breakfast: They offer a full hot food breakfast every morning at the hot food bar! We’re talking awesome things like French toast, scrambled eggs with chorizo, bacon, house sausage, oatmeal, and more. It’s a great option to grab a quick hot breakfast. They also offer breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and avocado toast in the Market cafe 7 days a week.

Best Time to Shop: The best time to shop for groceries tends to be on the weekends. Some of the food tenants tend to close on the weekends but the retail offerings are always open. Unlike most stores the foot traffic is actually less on the weekends so it makes it a much more peaceful shopping time with very short lines.

Best Time for Samples: want to score samples? Go Monday-Friday either 11am-2pm or 5pm-8pm. Look for a public calendar of demos soon!

Wine Deal: Did you know if you buy any 6 bottle or more of wine you can get 10% off? This discount is always available, but seldom mentioned or advertised.

Did You Know?
100% Organic: The entire produce department is 100% organic and locally sourced whenever possible. This is often why some items are not available year round as local farms cannot offer them year round.

Craft Chocolates: The Market features over 60 craft chocolates brands from all over the world. And, they are planning a new display that will showcase some of the best chocolates from around the world. Ideal for Valentine’s Day, just around the corner.

Famous Pie: The Market pizza is Tony’s Famous Slice house recipes. Tony Gemignani is famous for his award winning pizzas such as the Sweet Grandma and classic thin crust cheese. All dough is made in house and takes over 3 days to prepare! Insider tip: You can buy a ball of the house-made dough at the Pizza station. Just ask the cashier.

Open 364 Days: The Market is always open (except for Christmas day). This means that you can always stroll over to get last minute groceries and food year round.

Upcoming Events at The Market:
11th Annual SF Beer Week (February 5-9). The Market will be doing four main events for SF Beer week this year as a sponsor partner. These events are low key, low pressure with The Market Bar offering limited release beers and hosting ambassadors from each brewery each night to talk about the beers.

Lady M Cakes from New York will be setting up shop to be able to offer online pickups of pre-ordered cakes from February 9th – 14th.

Vendor Fairs. The Market is planning an annual Fall Harvest Fair again this year, with no date on the books yet. We got an exclusive tip that the event was so popular that they may host a spring version!

The Market is working on more events and taking ideas from the neighborhood on what events you would enjoy! Anyone with suggestions is encouraged to email feedback@visitthemarket.com.
