It's Bike Month and San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is celebrating with a full month of free programming. If you’re an avid cyclist or have taken an interest after taking one of NEMA’s Public Bikes out for a cruise around town – May is your month. Now more than ever it’s easier and safer to ride right outside our doors with a car-free Market Street. Experience a full month of online events and celebrations, including the first ever virtual Bike-themed Trivia Night, Intro to Biking in San Francisco webinar, Women Bike SF Virtual Coffee Club, and How-To Videos and Other Bike Education Resources.

Here are a few or the many activities zooming around this month:

Virtual Bike-themed Trivia Night: This event is bound to test your wits and skills as we go over a series of questions both bike and non-bike related.

Bike Touring 101: Learn how to go bike touring so that you’re ready to explore by bicycle once restrictions are lifted. Learn the difference between bike touring and bike camping, what equipment you need, what to wear, where to ride, and more! SF Bicycle Coalition board president Jean Kao and her partner Magnus Barber have gone bike touring all over the world. They have lots of stories to share.

How to Get into Recreational Riding: Do you want to start exploring recreationally but don’t know where to start? Come hear from Victoria Norman-Kuber and SF Bicycle Coalition board member Marie Jonas. They’ll talk about going from bike novices to experienced road riders. Learn how to start, what to wear, where to ride, and more!

Intro to Biking in San Francisco Webinar: Riding a bike remains a great way to get around for essential travel and to get fresh air and exercise (all while remaining socially distant, of course!). Learn how to safely and confidently bike in SF.

Women Bike SF Virtual Coffee Club: Join a weekly coffee club in honor of Bike Month throughout May! Women Bike SF Coffee Club is the perfect place to find community, talk about bikes and share biking tips, especially during these weird times.

You can bike for essential travel (going to work or buying groceries) and for recreation as long as you practice proper social distancing. Bike repair is considered an essential service, which means that bike shops are allowed to remain open for repair and maintenance services. Here are the bike shops that are currently open.

We’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg on the things planned this month – let your love for life on two wheels shine and enjoy this month of May overflowing with opportunities to keep your wheels turning. Have questions? Check out SF Bike’s FAQ: Biking During Shelter in Place.
