May is right around the corner and you know what that means; it's Bike Month and San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is celebrating with a full month of programming. If you’re an avid cyclist or have taken an interest after taking a NEMA Public Bikes out for a cruise around town – May is your month.

Here are a few or the many activities zooming around this month and beyond:

WEBINAR: Intro to Biking in SF with Bay Wheels. Wednesday, April 28 @ 5-6pm

This course covers bicycling for everyday riding in SF and how to use the Bay Wheels system. This course is a great class for people who already know how to bike but are considering bicycling more in the city, joining Bay Wheels, or looking to brush up on skills.

Adult Learn to Ride Class. Sunday, May 2 @ 11:00am-2pm

It’s never too late to learn to bicycle! Instructors will work one-on-one to assist participants in learning the basics of balancing, starting, stopping and steering a bike, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment.

San Francisco Bay Trail Confidential*. Wednesday, May 5 @ 7:30-8:30pm

San Francisco Bay Trail Confidential is a monthly Zoom program exploring the San Francisco Bay Trail. The program spotlights great places to visit on the SF Bay Trail, which currently spans more than 350 miles along SF and San Pablo Bays.

Webinar: Intro to Riding a Scooter in SF with Spin. Thursday, May 6 @ 5:30-6:30pm

Interested in riding a scooter in SF, and learning how to use the Spin scooter system? Join this webinar, where they'll cover: Helmet fit Rights and rules of the road, Crash avoidance, How to use the Spin scooter system and more.

On-Bike Practice for Beginning Adult Cyclists. Sunday, May 16 @ 11:00am-2pm

This class is intended for those who have taken our Adult Learn to Ride class and would like more guided instruction before hitting the streets by themselves. We will start by practicing beginner skills including confidently starting and stopping, and scanning and signaling to communicate next moves. After practicing those skills in a car-free space, participants will go on a guided, on-road ride to practice what they have learned. All participants MUST either bring a bike or rent a bike…

Webinar: Smart City Cycling 1. Wednesday, May 19 @ 6-7pm

Looking to get comfortable riding in San Francisco? Join this a class covering all you need to know for biking in SF and the Bay Area. This is the perfect class for people interested in biking but intimidated by city traffic, and for anyone already riding and looking to hone their skills.

Devil’s Slide Ride*. Saturday, May 22 @ 6:30am-5pm

The Devil's Slide Ride features three routes that offer something for everyone, from weekend warriors to hard-core endurance cyclists. Each distance features breath-taking coastal vistas, fearsome mountain climbs, rolling hills, winding backroads and best-in-class support.

Want to venture out on your own? The SF Bike Map & Walking Guide shows you everything you need to know to find your way around San Francisco on bike. This map indicates the grade of streets so you can avoid the steepest hills. Plus, the Bike Map shows you where the bike shops are and what type of bikeway is on each street.

Bike Security and Locking. Learn how to keep your bike safe and secure using precautionary measures and proper locking techniques, and explore steps you can take if your bike is stolen.

Bicycle Law. Learn the Rules of the Road and how to pedal safely and legally in San Francisco. Plus, what to do if you’re involved in a crash with a Crash Checklist.

Bikes & Transit. Combining bikes and transit is a great way to travel around the Bay Area. Learn the rules for bringing your bike on BART, Muni and Caltrain.
