Cocktail Kingdom

Minna Street in the Mid Market Area has become a hotbed of cocktail activity. The Boothby Center for the Beverage Arts, an industrial space on the second floor tucked behind Mission Street, is being overseen by a handful of talented local bartenders who have created a dynamic event and classroom space.

As a veteran journalist who had covered the drinks industry for two decades it is really exciting to see a group of bartenders banding together to create a school and event space. There are very few spaces like it in the country and it is a fun, off-the-beaten-track private party space.

SF Welcomes its First Sri Lankan Restaurant



The new 1601 Bar & Kitchen is conveniently tucked just behind Market Street and serves a menu of Sri Lankan-inspired small plates, some of which are high-end riffs on street foods. Many dishes, such as the crunchy raw kale salad, are vegetable-focused and there are lots of coconut at play in the menu, featured in small plates from the halibut ceviche to the coconut forbidden rice that accompanies the smoked salmon. The use of local ingredients, like heirloom potatoes and Straus yogurt, also give the menu a distinctly California vibe.

Chef owner Brian Fernando’s food elegantly combines some classic Indian ingredients and spices in mainstream favorites like meatballs and steak. The Chez Panisse alum is exploring his heritage while bringing San Francisco another high-end interpretation of Indian regional food, that pairs well with wine, much in the style of beloved Southern Indian restaurant Dosa.

How often have you been frustrated with your ability to chop meat or vegetables or end up cutting yourself? Do you even know where to get your knives sharpened in SF? As an ambitious home cook I have been through all of this, so I am happy to see a local culinary and team-building school giving us non-professionals some well-deserved lessons.

Hands on Gourmet does fun team-building events, from coaching you on how to prepare different kinds of dumplings, to making pizza dough, mostly for corporations. They also offer really useful classes on retro, and pertinent, topics like canning and everyday knife skills.

Music at Rickshaw Stop

This cozy and hip music venue has been around for almost a decade. It hosts a variety of live shows almost every night for what is usually a minor cover fee. A full-bar with lovely wine, beer and a solid cocktail selection is also available. There’s also a cozy upstairs balcony for prime-time viewing.

For a surprisingly small space, acoustics are good and the vibe is friendly. The range of musical genres is wide and the crowd is often as much fun to watch as the bands. “You won’t find any stereotypically sleazy club owners in cheesy silk shirts at the Rickshaw Stop,”
according to the SF Chronicle as cited on the venue’s websiteThe space is only a few blocks from Mid Market.

Classic SF Theaters Go Scottish

American Conservatory Theater (ACT) artistic Director Carey Perloff announced that the National Theatre of Scotland’s internationally acclaimed production of Black Watch will make its Northern California premiere at The Drill Court at the Armory Community Center, located in the Mission.

The show was directed by Tony Award winner John Tiffany and incorporates multimedia effects, traditional Scottish music and unique stagecraft to go inside the legendary regiment’s tour of duty in Iraq, according to ACT’s website. The show opens in May and runs through the beginning of June.

Mid Market Soon to be Home to a Host of New Restaurants

This centrally located artery is about to be jamming with new places to imbibe and snack, many of which promise to be more delicious than the fantastic food carts at the Civic Center Farmers’ Market (who doesn’t love a little bacon for breakfast, lunch or your dog?).

A handful of the new places slated to come online include a new beer hall at the base of Polk Street, the Driftwood and Southside Lounges and Whiteside Company, a new venture from Bar Agricole’s Thad Vogler, slated to open later this year. All of these recent openings were reported by 7X7 in this recent story. Beloved local chef Mourad Lahlou is also slated to move his cult Moroccan restaurant from the Richmond to New Montgomery by the end of this year.

The Clock at SFMOMA

The Clock

Art, upscale or edgy, has never been better in San Francisco. Renowned video artist Christian Marclay’s 24-hour exhibit debuted on April 6th in SF after a critically acclaimed run at New York’s MOMA. The show will run until June.

Marclay is a Bay Area artist and has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world. The exhibit is constructed from thousands of film clips indicating the passage of time and excerpts of these moments from their original contexts are edited together. It covers many time frames and genres that vary from silent classics and action blockbusters to Westerns and foreign films.

Cult Restaurateur Slated to Open Restaurant on Market

Beloved local chef Daniel Patterson is planning to open a new casual and full-service dining establishment on Market. He has become one of the Bay Area’s most iconic chefs by virtue of his local and experimental menu at Coi in North Beach, which remains one of the most difficult reservations to get in town.

Chef Daniel Patterson oversees a number of cutting-edge restaurants, such as Plum in Oakland, as well as Plum Bar, which is scheduled to open soon as part of the Daniel Patterson Group.

Top-Notch Coffee

San Francisco serves up coffee with the best of them. Seattle may have contributed to unique coffee house styles and brewing techniques but the Bay Area definitely holds its own. Top roasters and cafes include: Four Barrel, Marvelous SF, Blue Bottle, Sightglass and Ritual, which have locations in both the Mission and Hayes Valley.

The beauty is that each has its own style, and almost all the local coffee houses welcome lounging and laptop use. Blue Bottle has Turkish and Central European roots, and is located a few blocks away on Linden Street; while Sightglass focuses on small, locally sourced coffee and is located in SoMa. The beauty of them all is there for you to discover.

San Francisco is a Serious Bike Town

Exercise and convenience are key factors driving SF’s homegrown passion for bicycles. Parking for bikes is fairly easy and hills provide good exercise. The Mid Market location is also ideal to bike to many great places in the city in ten minutes or less (think the Mission, Ferry Building and maybe even Japantown for great food). Market Street is considered one of the busiest arteries in the country for bikers.

Thankfully the area is also home to great bike sales, repair and service shops such as
Huckleberry Bikes. The store, located close to 7th and Market, was founded by three friends, and even offers free bike repairs on that corner on weekday mornings. A press release from the Mayor’s office also states that “San Francisco’s bike counts have increased an impressive 71 percent to 8,314 riders and have increased seven percent since 2010.”

Many call the area the epicenter of San Francisco, which is no misnomer because it is right in the middle of the action! Tech lynchpins Twitter, Yammer, Dolby, One Kings Lane and Square have all moved their offices here in a revitalization of this neighborhood which has always been at the geographical heart of everything cool, hip, trendy and edible that makes SF so unique.

Fantastic new restaurants, from cult chefs like Daniel Patterson of Coi fame, are slated to open on the mid blocks of Market Street. Dozens of designer coffee houses ring the neighborhood. Bus, and bike routes, to and from every corner of the City, branch out from this transportation hub.
