Sushi Ondo comes to SoMa
Located just a short 0.3 miles from NEMA, there is a new and unique addition to the local foodie scene. Sushi Ondo offers an Omakase experience that fuses Korean and Japanese flavors and techniques.
This latest SoMa restaurant addition offers a welcoming feel providing patrons a range of dining settings from which to choose. There is a tasting Bar for Omakase enthusiasts, for those who are truly seeking a front-row seat to the Chef’s tasting menu, a roomy communal table for either a la carte or Omakase dining and a cozy lounge area with a tasty bar menu.
In a recent SF Eater article, they showcased what diners can expect at Sushi Ondo. “At Sushi Ondo (1550 Howard Street),diners who choose the omakase menu will receive three flights of nigiri sushi interspersed with small Korean dishes called yori (similar to Japanese small plates called zensai), like mulhwe, Korean whitefish ceviche.” Hoodline also has an excellent article showcasing this new restaurant.

As an avid consumer of omakase, I was both intrigued and skeptical about this concept of pairing traditional Japanese omakase with Korean dishes. But even in just its third week of operations, Sushi Ondo has really figured out how to bring the two together in a complementary way. And it makes perfect sense since the brains behind the concept are also behind Sushi Hon (excellent omakase) and Barnzu (contemporary Korean). Loved this place and their mission to pair Japanese Omakase with Delicious Korean dishes. A nice balance going from fresh mouth-watering fish to Korean meat, so no fish overload, which never happens to me but for some it can. Only 2 weeks old and Sushi Ondo has things impressively fine-tuned. The omakase alternates between Japanese and Korean dishes and it works incredibly well. The sushi is beautifully prepared and ultra fresh and the Korean dumpling and stew are beautifully done and are well suited to pair with Japanese cuisine. – Justin G.
